Background: Sixty percent of infants with severe neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy die, while most survivors have permanent disabilities. The antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase and the lipid peroxidation were assayed in erythroctyes from the cord blood of 25 fullterm newborn infants and their maternal blood abtained immediatedly after normal delivery.
