We report a human parechovirus-3 (HPeV-3) infection in 2 neonates who had prolonged fever (>5 days) with palmar-plantar erythema. This distinctive rash was observed 4–5 days after fever onset, just before defervescence. Elevated aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and ferritin levels were characteristic laboratory findings in the 2 cases, suggesting tissue damage caused by hypercytokinemia. Case 1 was treated with intravenous...

Purpose

Human parechovirus (HPeV) and enterovirus (EV) are causative agents of a sepsis-like illness in neonates and of infections of the central nervous system in young children. The objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence of HPeV3 and EV infection in young children with a sepsis-like illness or with meningitis in Jinju, Korea.

Methods

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were collected from...

Molecular detection of Bartonella henselae DNA from fleas obtained from dogs, Korea
Tae Hee Han, Ju-Young Chung, Hee Kyung Seong, Sang Woo Kim
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2006;49(9):983-986.   Published online September 15, 2006
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of Bartonella henselae DNA, which is known as an etiologic agent of lymphadenitis, in fleas from dogs. Methods : The Bartonella henselae infection was investigated in 42 fleas from 22 dogs in Korea. By using seminested PCR targeting pap31 gene, B. henselae DNA was amplified from fleas. Results :...

Purpose : The aims of this study were to analyze the clinical characteristics of children with Kikuchi's disease(KD) at a medical center and to investigate the etiologic role of human herpesvirus 8(HHV 8) or Epstein-Barr virus(EBV) in children with KD. Methods : Twenty six children who were diagnosed as KD between Jan. 1998 and Dec. 2005 were included....

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2005;48(7):789-792.   Published online July 15, 2005
We report a case of cat scratch disease (CSD) caused by Bartonella henselae in a 14-year-old boy who developed lymphadenopathy in the right cervical area, after a raising canine pet for 10 months. The cervical lymphadenopathy persisted for 14 days. Immunofluorescent antibody testing for B. henselae with the patient's serum was 1:64 positive. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis using the...

Clin Exp Pediatr. 2005;48(2):204-207.   Published online February 15, 2005
Ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, low-protein diet used in the treatment of epilepsy since 1920's. Recently, it's use for intractable epilepsy in childhood has increased. Complications of ketogenic diet are known to include dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, renal stones, metabolic derangement, hypercholesterolemia and refusal to eat. We experienced two cases of renal stones in children with intractable epilepsy during ketogenic...
A Case of Neonatal Lupus with Abnormal Liver Function Test and Skin Lesion
Ju-Young Chung, Myoung Jae Chey
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2005;48(1):85-87.   Published online January 15, 2005
Neonatal lupus(NL) is characterized by typical clinical features and the presence of maternal auto- antibodies. The principal serologic markers of NL are anti-Ro/SSA or anti-La/SSB maternal auto- antibodies, which are transferred across the placenta and can be detected for the first few months of the affected child. The major clinical manifestations are cardiac disease, notably congenital heart block, and cutaneous...
A Case of Herpetic Whitlow with Bacterial Superinfection
Ju-Young Chung, Sang-Woo Kim
Clin Exp Pediatr. 2003;46(9):918-920.   Published online September 15, 2003
Herpes simplex virus infection of the hand in children occurs after auto-inoculation from herpetic gingivostomatitis or herpes labialis. Herpetic whitlow should be suspected based on clinical signs. Diagnosis can be made by PCR or virus culture. Many misdiagnosed cases suggests that this disease is not sufficiently known. Surgical interventions may be harmful and should be avoided. We report a case...
