To determine the optimal position for the neonatal intensive care, transcutaneous oxygen tension (TCPO2) was monitored in 20 healthy preterm infants and 20 healthy term infants using the Radiometer Tc Oxgen Monitor in both supine and prone position. Also, transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO2) was monitored with tilting change in each position. When the infants were prone, TcPO2 rose by a mean of 7.36 mmHg... |

To evaluate the difference of normal flora between breast and formula-fed newborns, we performed quantitative posterior nasal swab culture in 21 breast-and 44 formula-fed newborns. Positive culture rates of total aerobes and total anaerobes were 100% and 98%, respecitively. Among the aerobes, positive culture rate was 100% in group B streptococcus, 98% in gram negative bacteria, 86% in staphylococcus aureus, 82% in staphylococcus epidermidis... |
To estimate hematologic reference values of the peripheral blood of newnboms and infants, the author examined the routine hematologic parameters by heel or finger puncture in 73 cases of first day newborn, 64 cases of 7 day newborns, 10 cases of 2 month infants, 14 cases of 3~6 month infants and 13 cases of 15~18 month children. The routine hematologic parameters including red cell... |
We observed the status of pituitary hormones (growth hormone, TSH, ACTH, gonadotropin and ADH) in the patients with intrasellar and suprasellar tumors (Table 1 and 2) before and after treatment of tumors. They were estimated from the results of various provocative tests to the pituitary hormones after confimation of normal thyroid function. The results were as belows (Table 3 and 4): 1) Most patients with craniopharyngioma... |
After the discovery of penicillin by Fleming in 1939, the mortality rate in the acute stage of the childhood osteomyelitis was markedly decreased. But, because of abuse & misuse of the antibiotics and increment of resistant organisms to antibiotics, the incidence of complications, prevalance and chronic cases tended to increase. During the period of 12 years and 10 months extending from April, 1975 to... |
A retrospective study on patients with congenital hypothyroidism was undertaken. The following results were obtained from 17 patients, on whom follow up investigations were available. 1) Males outnumbered females. The etiologic classification revealed: thyroid agenesis (64.7%), dyshormonogenesis (23.5%), and ectopic thyroid (11.8%). 2) In two-thirds of cases the diagnosis were made under 1 year of age, with 23.5% of cases being diagnoses below 3 month and 41.2%... |
We experienced a case of adult type Gaucher’s disease in a 2 year 9 month old female. The patient had hepatosplenomegaly with anemia and characteristic Gaucher cells in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy of liver and spleen. Diagnosis was confirmed by demonstration of β-glucosidase enzyme deficiency in circulating leukocytes. Partial splenectomy was followed by improvement of anemia and thrombocytopenia. A brief review of literature was done. |
Conjoined twin is a rare anomaly with an incidence estimated at 1 in 50,000 deliveries and has extremely variable internal anomalies depending on the extent of the united area. We observed a case of male conjoined twin joined by thorax and abdomen who has 3 upper & 2 lower extremities. After birth, the twin revealed severe respiratory difficulties and died at 16th day of... |
Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection is one of the common causes of erythema nodosum in Europe, but in Korea only 2 cases have been reported. Recently authors experienced a 6 year old boy who suffered from erythematous painful skin lesions on the shin and calf, and was diagnosed serologically as erythema nodosum due to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection. So we report here the clinical findings of this... |
Transient Tricuspid Insufficiency(TTI) of newborn is a feature of myocardial dysfunction caused by myocardial hypoxemia secondary to reduced arterial oxygen content and excessive right ventricular work consequent to pulmonary hypertension.' Since Doppler echocardiography has been used to diagnose cardiac disease, it allows recording of regurgitant turbulent flow pattern. We report one case of TTI in a 36 week-gestational-aged newborn detected by continuous wave Dopplar echocardiography... |
Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis is rare disease which is characterized by impaired renal acidification at distal renal tubule and collecting duct. The urinary pH cannot be reduced below 5.8 despite severe systemic acidosis. A 6 months old boy was admitted to Ped. Dept, of Korea University Hospital due to fever and tachypnea. In case I, femoral and popliteal venography showed no varix. The review of literatures on this syndrome was presented and discussions were attempted... |
We have recently experienced a case of Kleeblattschadel Syndrome in a 5 month old boy. The diagnosis was made by characteristic morphologic clinical features and radiologic findings. We report this case with brief review of some related literatures. |
