- Abstract
- We had treated a hepatic rickets in 6 infants with neonatal hepatitis from June 1989 to August 1990 at Asan Medical Center.
The results were as follows
1) Age of 6 patients were below 4 months and 4 patients were male, 2 patients were female.
2) The clinical findings were hepatosplenomegaly(5 cases), jaundice(4 cases), craniotabes (4 cases), failure to thrive(2 cases), hypocalcemiac seizure(2 cases), rachitic rosary(2 cases), hemolytic anemia(1 case), rib fracture(1 case).
3) All patients were tested cytomegalovirus IgM antibody and positive in 3 cases.
4) Radiologially, long bone showed typical rachitic findings.
5) After high dose vitamin D treatment, biochemical findings of calcium, inorganic phosphate, alkaline phosphatase and radiologic findings were improved.
In conclusion we found that rickets was a common complication in neonatal hepatitis and in our series, the cause of neonatal hepatitis was cytomegalovirus infection.
Therefore we should concern about cytomegalovirus infection and hepaic rickets in the patients with neonatal hepatitis.
