- Abstract
- Forty four cases of Polyhydramnios were studied clinically among 13,337 newborn infants delivered in Kwangiu Christian Hospital during the period from April 1, 1986 through March 31, 1990.
1) The incidence of polyhydramnios was 0.33%.
2) The mean gestational age was 37.2 week, and 18 cases(40.8%)were premature, while 3 babies (6.8%) were born postmaturely.
3) The mean birth weight was 2.3kg, with 30 babies (68.2%) falling into the category of the low birth weight infants.
4) Male to female ratio of the infants born to polyhydramniotic mothers was 28:16 (1.75:1).
5) Among 37 deliveries, twin pregnancy found in 7 cases (18.9%).
6) The incidence of polyhydramnios increased with increase in the parity. It was 0.22% in first pregnancy, 0.35% in the second, and 0.45% in the third.
7) The method of delivery was N.S.V.D.(24 cases, 64.9%), followed by C-section (8 cases, 21.6%) and breech extraction (5 cases, 13.5%).
8) The perinatal mortality of infant born to polyhydramniotic mothers was 681.8 per 1,000, which was significantly higher than that of overall hospital incidence (p<0.001).
9) The incidence of anomaly in infants born to polyhydramniotic mothers was 61.4%. The anomalies found were 13 cases in CNS, 9 in gastrointestinal tract, 2 in respiratory tract, 3 in other organs.
10) The perinatal mortality in infants with anomaly was 740.7 per 1,000, not significantly higher than that in infants without anomaly(p<0.05).
11) The perinatal mortality of the infants with the birth weight below 2,500g was 8333.3, whereas that of those with the birth weight above 2,500 g was 357.1 (p<0.01).
12) The perinatal mortality of newborn with gestational age below 37 week and 42 week was 692.3, and of babies above 43 week was 666.7, not significantly different from each other (p<0.05)
