- Statistical Observation for the Pediatric Patients in ICU

- Abstract
- A statistical study was performed on 221 ICU cared pediatric patients who were admitted to the department of pediatrics, Yonsei university college of medicine, Seoul, Korea from Apr. 1983 to Mar. 1991.
The results were as follows :
1) Total number of subject were 221, it was 7.5% of total ICU patients and 1.3% fo total admitted pediatric patients. The male to female ratio was 1.8 : 1.
2) There were no differences in yearly distribution.
3) In age distribution, the neonates and the infants occupied 42.0% of total admissionm and 52.0% fo total deaths. The mean age of the subjects was 2.8 years.
4) Mean duration of admission was 6.3 days.
5) Neurologic diseases were 46.6% and respiratory diseases 18.2% and infectious diseases were 14.5% according to organ system.
6) Reye syndrome were 19.0% and encephalitis, enceohalopathy 10.9% and status epilepticus 9.5%, bronchiolitis 7.7% and sepsis were 7.2% according to diagnosis.
7) Respirator was used to 39.4% of subjects and the mean duration of respiratory care was 5.5 days.
8) The moitality rate was 15.8% and the major causes were Reye syndrome (34.3%), sepsis(20.0%), encephalitis and encephalopathy(11.4%), and hyaline membrane disease(8.6%) in order.
Unlike general ward pediatric patients, the pediatric patients in ICU are inflicted with severe form of diseases and grave prognosis although smaller its number, therefore, experienced pediatric specialists will be more needed as well as establishment of intensive care unit solely intended for pediatric patients.
