Carcinomas in Childhood -A 10-Year Experience in Seoul National University Hospital-

Abstract
Carcinomas in childhood differ from those in adults in their frequency, histologic type, and distribution of primary sites. In children, carcinomas are rare and few series have been published containing sufficient mumbers of cases to permit a reliable account of the incidence and survival of children with carcinoma. During a 10-year period, 1982-1991, we observed 40 patients less than 16 years of age with a histologic diagnosis of carcinoma in Seoul National University Hospital. They represented 2.6% of all patients with leukemia or malignant solid tumors referred to this hospital during the study period. Out of 40 patients, 21 were male and 19 female with the sex ratio of 1.11:1. Most of patients were over 5 years of age and the median age were 10 years of age. Thyroid carcinomas occurred more frequently in girls(1:2.75) and hepatocellular carcinomas in boys (5:1). By primary site, thyroid carcinoma topped the list with 15 cases (38%), followed by heptocellular carcinoma with 12 cases (30%). Others were adrenal cortical carcinomas (3 cases), nasopharyngeal (2 cases), parotid (2 cases), and 1 case of thymus, ovary, renal cell, laryngeal, pancrease, skin carcinoma. There were neither carcinomas of unknown primary nor carcinomasas second malignant neoplasm.
