- A comparative study of therapeutic effect of combined treatment with aspirin and intravenous gammaglobulin versus aspirin alone in Kawasaki disease.

- Abstract
- We compared the therapeutic effect of intravenous gamma globulin plus aspirin with that of aspirin
alone in reducing the coronary aneurysms and changes of clinical courses in 57 children with
Kawasaki disease who were admitted in Dae Dong hospital from Jul. 1987 to Jun. 1990
These 57 cases were divided into two groups:
Group A:High dose aspirin (100 mg/kg/day) during febrile stage and then tappered to low dose (30
mg/kg/day) during afebrile stage.
Group B:Intravenous gamma globulin (400 mg/kg/day) for 5 days during febrile stage plus aspirin
as same as the above method.
The results of study were as follows:
1) In group B, the duration of fever after treatment was significantly shorted than group A (Group
A: 5.2±2.6 days, Group B: 3.9±1.4 days) (p<0.01).
2) No significant differences were noted in change of leukocyte, hemoglobin, and platelet counts in
two groups.
3) At admission, no significant difference was noted in the ESR in two groups. However, after 14
days treatment, the value of ESR was more rapidly decreased in group A (Group A: 84.00±27.41 mm/
hr, Group B: 65.22±34.30mm/hr) (P<0.02).
4) At admission, the incidence of the abnormal EKG findings were not different in both group and
after 2 weeks treatment, group B was more rapidly normalized than group A but it was not
significant (Group A: 28.0%, Group B: 18.8%) (X2=0.682, p=0.409).
5) In 2D-Echocardiography, coronary aneurysm were more frequent in group A (8.0%) than in
group B (3.1%) but it was not significant.
