- Abstract
- Clinical courses of 12 neonates who were confirmed as neonatal bacterial meningitis by CSF culture
or CSF latex agglutination test from January, 1986 to June, 1990, emphasizing on their complications
and treatments, were evaluated.
The results were summarized as follows;
1) The most common etiologic organism was E. coli (33.3%).
2) Two most common complications were ventriculitis (66.7%) and hydrocephalus (66.7%).
3) EVD with intraventricular antibiotics therapy was only performed in a half of patients with
Gram(—) organism induced meningitis, and V-P shunt was needed in a half of patients with hydroce-
phalus.
4) The prognosis was good in all patients with Gram(+) organisms induced meningitis, but poor in
4 cases (57.1%) among 7 patients with Gram(—) organisms induced meningitis.
The prognosis was good in 4 cases who were not accompanied by ventriculitis and hydrocephalus,
but poor in 4 cases (57.1%) among 7 cases accompanied by them.
