Upper gastrointestinal diseases diagnosed by upper gastrointestinal fiberoptic endoscopy in children.

Abstract
A clinical analysis was carried out on 83 cases of upper gastrointestinal diseases, diagnosed by fiberoptic endoscopic examination in children, who had visited the department of pediatrics, Keimyung University, Dong San Hospital from January 1980 to June 1987. Following results were obtained: Out of 83 cases, 61 (73.5%) were between 11-15 years of age and the male to female ratio was 3. 6:1. The disease distribution in order of frequency was gastritis (38.6%), duodenal ulcer (36.2%), gastric ulcer (10.8%), duodenitis (4.8%), esophageal varix (4.8%), gastric bezoar (2.4%), esophagitis (1.2%), and gastric foreign body (1.2%). The frequent symptoms were abdominal pain (75.9%), nausea & vomiting (38.6%), hematemesis (21.6%), melena (20.4%) and gastric discomfortness (20.4%) in order. Gastrointestinal bleeding was noticed in 66.7% of gastric ulcer and 53.3% of duodenal ulcer. The hematemesis was seen more in gastric ulcer and melena in duodenal ulcer. Among 80 cases who were given therapy medically or surgically, 79 cases were improved without having significant complications or sequalae. There were no serious complications following the endoscopic examination and have been done the procedure safely with the simple local anesthesia in children.
