A Study on Lighting in school.

Abstract
The students had to spend their most of times in school. It was supposed that the lighting of classrooms greatly affected the growth and development and visual acuity of students. The illuminance was measured in 12 classrooms of Chun An city (primary, middle and high school) from July to September, 1989. To evaluate the present status and problems of lighting in classrooms, we analyzed the results of measurement and questionnaires about illumination in the classrooms. The results of study were as follows: 1) If it depended only on daylight to illuminate the classrooms, there was a wide illumination difference between window side (2500—3000 lux) and aisle side (180—400 lux). 2) The illumination degree of blackboard was affected more by weather than by the position of the student. 3) Sixty-nine percent of the students answered that they needed a local illuminating equipment on the blackboard. 4) Eighty-three percent of the students complained about easy fatigue of their eyes during study. 5) Fifty-one percnet of the students wanted a artificial lighting in their classrooms on the rainy days and there was no difference between groups of window side and aisle side. 6) The levels of illumination degree on the blackboards and the classrooms which were measured on the rainy days were blow the Goverment regulation (150 lux). 7) The levels of illumination degree on the blackboards and classrooms which were measured with the artificial lighting on the rainy days were below service illuminance, (blackboard-500 lux, clas- sroom-300 lux) 8) There was no fixed standardization of lighting equipment in each classroom and it was necessar- y to increase the illumination twice the existing state.
