Abstract
We made a statistical survey on the patients admitted to the Department of Pediatrics of Kwangju Christian Hospital during the past 5 years from Jan. 1984 to Dec. 1988 The results were as follows: 1) The pediatric inpatients during the period totaled 16,119, of which 10,020 were male, with the sex ratio being 1.6:1. 2) Pediatric patients amounted to 17.8% of all admission cases of Kwangju Christian Hospital during the period. 3) Occupying 29.7% of total admissions, the neonates less than 1 month of age topped among all age groups, and 2.7% of them ended in fatality, accounting for 55.6% of total deaths. 4) Seasonal distribution revealed high incidence in summer. 5) Respiratory tract disease was the most frequent (27.3%), followed by infectious and parasitic disease (26.7%) and neonatal disease (25.1%), with these three groups making up 79.1% of all cases. 6) Major leading causes of hospitalization were diarrheal diseases (14.2%), pneumonia(13.1%), hyperbilirubinemia (11.8%), upper respiratory infection(7.8%), prematurity(5.4%) in the decreasing order of frequency. 7) Overall mortality was 1.4%. 8) The leading disease causing death was prematurity, followed by pneumonia, congenital heart disease and sepsis in the decreasing order of frequency. 9) Of individual diseases, Reye syndrome was found to be the most serious with the mortality rate of 36%, followed by tetanus neonatorum (26.7%), severe dehydration with electrolyte imbalance(22. 5%) and sepsis (21.6%).
