- Abstract
- Statistical observation was performed on 11,857 cases of neonates which were seen in the nursery,
Pusan, Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital, during the past 5 years from Jul. 1983 to Jun. 1988.
The results were as follows:
1) Among 11,857 neonates, the percentage distribution by birth weight was 6.1% for 2,500 gm or
less, 3.7% for 4,001 gm or more and the sex ratio of male to female was 1.1: 1
2) The mortality rate was 10.5 per 1,000 live births, sex ratio of male to female was 1.3:1 and the
causes of neonatal death in order of frequency were prematurity (49.6%), respiratory diseases (24.0%)
congenital anomalies (11.2%),birth injuries (8.0%), and unknown causes (7.2%).
3) The mean growth data at birth were as following:
Weight: 3.43±0.43 kg in male, 3.29±0.41 kg in female
Heigh: 52.03±2.81 cm in male, 51.53±2.31 cm in female
Head circumference: 33.39±1.72cm in male, 32.70±1.57 cm in female
Chest circumference: 32.49±1.61 cm in male, 32.41 ±1.48 cm in female
4) Among 11,857 neonates, 773 (6.5%) were under 37 wks and 534 (4.5%) were above 42 wks, and
among 632 neonates of birth weight l,501~2,500 gm, 284 (44.9%) were under 37 wks and 344 (54.4%)
were between 37 〜 42 wks.
5) The types of delivery in order of frequency were spontaneous vaginal delivery (72.0%), Cesarean
section (23.7%), vacuum delivery (3.7%), breech delivery (0.5%), and forceps delivery (0.2%).
Among neonates weighing 2,501 〜3,500gm, 0.2% were breech delivery, but among neonates
weighing less than 2,500gm, the percentage of breech delivery was 4.6%.
6) Among all neonates, 18.8% had neonatal asphyxia (a 1-minute Apgar Score of 6 or less). In the
spontaneous vaginal delivery group, the incidence was only 7.4%,but 49.5% and 80.7% in the
Cesarean section and breech delivery groups, respectively. Only 13.9% of full-term neonates had
asphyxia, but the percentage was 76.6% and 30.2% in the prematurity and postmaturity groups,
respectively.
7) The incidence of twin babies was 294 (147 pairs), 2.5%; 1 pair per 80 neonates. Of all twins, 45.
6% were below 2,500 gm of birth weight and 35.7% were prematurity.
8) The incidence of neonatal jaundice was 61.8%.
9) Among all neonates, there were 4,816 (40.6%) high risk infants; and the order of frequency was
Cesarean section (57.6%), prematurity (16.1%), meconium-stained (15.7%), birth weight 2,500 gm or
less (14.8%), postmaturity (11.0%), etc.
