Abstract
Modem medical science has been developed advanced rapidly in the past years, but congenital anomalies are known as a major cause of neonatal death. So, we studied the incidence of congenital malformations among 11,119 babies deliveried or admitted at EWUH during a period of five years starting from June 1983. The results were as follows: 1) The incidence of congenital malformations among 11,119 deliveries was 1.5%(1.5% among live births and 2.8% among still births). 2) The incidence of congenital malformations was 1.7% for male and 1.3% for female. 3) The incidence of congenital malformations among the babies, below 32 weeks was 4.2%, and 7. 6% among the babies, between 32 weeks and 36 weeks, 1.2% among the babies, between 37 weeks and 41 weeks and 3.6% among the babies, over 42 weeks. 4) The incidence of congenital malformations among the babies, below 2,500 g of birth weight was 5.5%, between 2,500g and 3,999g was 1.2% and over 4,000g was 1.5%. 5) The incidence of congenital malformations among the babies below 3 of the number of parity was 0.2% and 29.4% among the babies, over 3 of the number of parity. 6) 4.4% of babies born to mothers younger than 20 years of age had malformations, mothers aged between 20 and 34 years delivered anomalous babies in 1.4% and older than 35 years delivered anomalous babies in 3.4%. 7) The incidence of congenital malformations among the babies whoes Apgar score was between 0 and 3 was 24.1%, 3.2% among the babies whoes Apgar score was between 4 and 7 and 1.0% among the babies whoes Apgar score was between 8 and 10. 8) The incidence of malformation was related with multiple pregnancy(p < 0.05). 9) The organs involved were in descending order of froquency: the musculoskeletal, gastrointesti- nal, cardiovascular, genitourinary, chromosome, central nervous, skin and soft tissue, and the respira- tory system.
