- Abstract
- To evaluate the growth status of Congenital Heart Disease, we analyzed the 69 children with
Ventricular Septal Defect who were admitted to Pediatric department and Chest Surgery department,
Pusan National University Hospital from January, 1986 to June, 1987.
The result of study were as follows:
1) This group was composed of 69 consecutive operation on children with ventricular septal defect.
The sex distribution chanced to be 37 boys and 32 girls, the sex ratio thus being 1.2:1.
2) Prior to operation, the mean weight and height percentile of both boys and girls were below the
normal, and the mean postoperative weight and height percentile were increased in both boys and
girls were below the normal, but boys weight value was statistically significant acceleration after
surgery (p<0.01).
3) The greatest acceleration in mean weight after operation was seen in the case of both boys and
girls (p<0.01) in the group submitted to operation at the earliest age (under 6yrs).
4) The physical capacity was reduced preoperatively in both boys and girls. The number of children
who already preoperatively were considered to be normal improved still further after surgery.
5) The degree of Right ventricular hypertrophy in electrocardiographic findings was significantly
reduced in boys, but in girls.
6) Heart size in chest X-ray was above normal in both boys and girls before operation and no
significant change after surgery.
