A Study on Pratol(R) Poisoning in Childhood.

Abstract
A Clinical observation was made on 22 cases of Pratol poisoning in childhood, who were admitted to department of pediatrics, severance hospital from January, 1979 to June, 1989. The results were as follows: 1) The ratio of male to female was 1:1 in total, 7 cases: 3 cases in the age group of 1 to 3 year and 3 cases: 7 cases in the age group of 9 to 15 year. 2) The causes of poisoning were accident in 59.1% (13 cases) and suicidal attempts in 36.4% (8 cases) in school age. 3) GI manifestations such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, the most common clinical symp- tom, were 63.6% (14 cases), cardiovascular manifestations such as PVC, ventricular fibrillation, sinus arrhythmia were 54.5% (12cases), and CNS manifestations such as seizure, unconsciousness, were 50% (1 leases). 4) Hematuria, the most common abnormal urinary finding, Was 36.4% (8cases) and pyuria, proteinuria, glucosuria were not common. 5) Electrolyte disturbances were prominent in clinically severe cases. 6) Five cases (22.7%) had no significant clinical findings on admission, 14cases (63.3%) were improved during admission, 3 cases (13.6%) were not improved. 7) Three patients expired due to premature ventricular contraction, ventricular fibrillation and acute renal failure within 24 hours after ingestion of pratol by sucidal attempt.
