- Clinical Study on Hypernatremic Dehydration in Children.

- Abstract
- The clinical study was done on 68 cases of hypernatremic dehydration which were diagnosed at
pediatric department of Dong-san Hospital Keimyung University during the period from January 1980
to June 1987.
The results were as follows;
1) Among 672 cases with dehydration, hypernatremic dehydration was 10.1%
2) The higer monthly distribution was in May and November.
3) Out of 68 cases, 61 cases (89.7%) were under the 6 months of age with the peak incidence in
neonatal period (64.7%).
4) In 52 cases (76.5%), serum Na was between 150—159 mEq/L.
5) The other laboratory findings were as follows;
BUN and creatinine were increased in about 75%
hypocalcemia in 25%
hypokalemia in 5.9%
hyperkalemia in 35.3%.
6) The most frequent underlying disease was sepsis (45.6%) followed by gastroenteritis (36.8%).
7) As for the feeding history, the formular feeding was in 50.5% and breast feeding in 23.5%.
8) The hyperglycemia (over 250 mg/dl) was observed in 22.0%.
9) The convulsion was developed in 20.6%.
As the serum sodium level was increased, the frequency of convulsion was also increased.
10) Mortality rate was 8.9%, 12 cases (17.6%) were discharged in hopeless state and neurologic
sequeale was seen in 4 cases (5.9%).
