- Abstract
- Twenty-one children and young adults with Insulin-dependent diatetes mellitus and 23 control
underwent 2D and M-mode echocardiography.
Following results were obtained:
1) LVESD, LVEDD, EF, FS, LAD/AOD ratio, Dm of IVS and Dm of PLVWT were not significantly
different in diabetics compared to control subjects.
2) In IDDM PEP was slightly increased and LVET was slightly decreased, but there was not
statistical significance between the two groups. But PEP/LVET ratio was significantly smaller than
that of control group, which, I think, was compatible with recent studies showing increased myocar-
dial contractility in young (LDDM) diabetics without microvascular complication13,30)or with microal-
buminuric patients13) and with recent work showing in creased cardiac performance22) and cardiac
output21) during poor glycemic control.
3) IRT was significantly longer in diabetics than in control group.
So I think that 2D and M-mode Echocardiography be performed in young IDDM with or without
cardiovascular complications, and their results should be followed-up
