- Abstract
- Paraquat is a widely used herbicide and its poisoning in human induces acute renal failure, hepatic
dysfunction, progressive respiratory failure, oral cavity ulcer and cardiac manifestations with high
mortality rate.
We experienced a case of paraquat poisoning in a 12 years old child who revealed acute renal
failure, pneumothorax, subcutaneous emphysema, pneumomediastinum and died 44 hours at acciden-
tal ingestion of paraquat solution inspite of intensive care.
So they must be attentive to store the herbicide in an agricultural community or an orchard where
it is consumed a great deal.
And in order to prevent the children from the poisoning, it is required to educate farmers thorough-
ly about the toxicity of paraquat.
A brief review of literature was made.
