- Clinical Studies of Childhood Typhoid Fever during Outbreak.

- Abstract
- During 2 months from April 1988 to May 1988 when typhoid fever outbreak occured in the hot
spring resort town, 52 cases of typhoid fever had been admitted to the department of Pediatrics Soon
Chun Hyang Chun An Hospital, and evaluated clinically. The results were summarized as follows.
1) Among the 52 cases of typhoid fever, 28 were male and 24 were female. The peak age group was
from 1 to 5 year of age and the youngest case was a 9 month old female patient.
2) The clinical findings during admission were as follows; fever (100%), poor appetite (80.8%),
abdominal pain (75%), hepatomegaly (69.2%), throat injection (61.5%), abdominal tenderness (57.7%),
diarrhea (55.8%), abdominal distension (53.8%), cough (46.2%), constipation (42.3%), splenomegaly (38.
5%), vomiting (38.5%), nausea (26.9%), and sore throat (17.3%).
3) The hematologic features on admission were as followes; anemia was 23.1%, leukopenia was
revealed 26.9%, and thrombocytopenia was 26.7%. SGOT was elevated in 96%, and SGPT was
elevated in 68%. In the bacteriologically proven cases, 0 agglutinin titer over 1:160 was 9.1%, and H
agglutinin titer over 1:160 was 81.8%. The positive bacteriologic culture was 19.2% in blood, 46.2%
in stool, and 19.2% both in blood and stool.
4) The average days of defervescence period was 3.76 days with ampicillin and Bactrim therapy.
5) Among the 52 cases, 7 cases developed complications, 5 case of bronchopneumonia, 1 case of GI
hemorrhage, and hyponatremia respectively. The associated diseases were iron deficiency anemia,
hepatitis carrier, and measles in 1 case respectively.
