- Abstract
- This study was undertaken to evaluate the relationship between oxytocin which was administered
to pregnant women during delivery or pregnancy and hyperbilirubinemia of newborn. Among new-
borns who were delivered in KHUH from Feb. 1987 to Sep. 1987 and showed hyperbilirubinemia
whithin 1 week after birth without definite etiologies of hyperbilirubinemia of newborn, 30 newborns
delivered by induced labour and 30 newborns delivered by spontaneous nature delivery were studied
and compared about gestational age, birth weight, peak bilirubin level, hemoglobin, hematocrit,
serum Na+ and osmolality.
The results were summerized as follow;
1) Mean gestational age of induced labour group is 40.2 ±2.3 weeks, and of spontaneous labour
group is 39.2 ±2.3 weeks.
2) There was no difference of mean birth weight between two groups.
3) Mean bilirubin level of induced labour group was 14.6±2.1 mg%, and of spontaneously delivered
group was 13.9±1.6 mg%.
4) Mean serum Na+ level of induced labour group was 138.1 ±4.8 mEg/L, of spontaneously deliver-
ed group was 140.8 ±4.6 mEg/L. Hyponatremia was observed 9 cases (30.0%) of induced labour group
and 4 cases (13.3%) in spontaneously delivered group.
5) Although mean serum osmolality level in two groups was normal and had no statistically
significant differene, 9 cases (30.0%) of induced labour group and 5 cases (13.3%) of spontaneously
labour group revealed hyponatremia.
6) There was no difference between two groups in serum hemoglobin and hematocrit.
7) In induced labour group birth weight had significant correlation with bilirubin.
8) In spontaneous labour group gestational age had significant correlation with bilirubin, but birth
weitht, hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum Na+ and osmolaltiy had not correlation with bilirubin.
