- Abstract
- A variety of urinary tract anomalies were detected in 1,569 children with congenital heart disease
during their cardiac evaluation with cardiac cineangiography in the Department of Pediatrics, Seoul
National University Children’s Hospital within a period from October 1985 to April 1988.
The incidence, nature and course of these urinary tract anomalies were analyzed and the results
were as follows;
1) The number of male children with congenital heart disease was 912, and that of female children
657. The youngest was 1 day old and the oldest was 18 years old.
2) The incidence of urinary tract anomalies in children with congenital heart disease was 3.6%(56
patients), higher than that of general population(0.3-2%).
3) There was no statistical difference between the incidence of urinary tract anomalies in children
with cyanotic heart disease(3.9%) and that in childeren with acyanotic heart disease(3%).
4) Urinalysis during follow up period revealed that the incidence of hematuria(RBC > 5/HPF) and
pyuria(WBC > 5/ HPF) were 32.4% and 21.6% respectively. Renal function at cardiac cineangiography was normal in all patients.
5) Mean follow up period was 10.5 :t 1.2 months and 4 patient expired due to extrarenal cause.
Conclusively, the incidence of urinary tract anomalies in children with congenital heart disease was
higher than general population. Urinary tract anomalies can be easily found by taking additional
abdominal scout film after cardiac cineangiography, and the early diagnosis of urinary tract anomalies with such a simple procedure is helpful to the total care of the children with congenital heart
disease.
