Abstract
The primary vesicourteral reflux is the reflux of urine from the bladder to ureter and renal pelvis due to congenital incompetence of valvular mechanism at the ureterovesical junction. It can result in the development of renal scars(reflux nephropathy), particularly in association with urinary tract infection and intrarenal reflux. The authors studied 21 patients with primary vesicourteral reflux who were admitted to department of Pediatrics Ewha Womans University Hospital. The results were as follows: 1) 14 of 21 patients revealed bilateral vesicourteral reflux and refluxing ureters and renal units were 35 cases. 2) Sex ratio of male to female was 4.3:1. 3) Chief complaints on admission were fever, urinary freguency, turbid urine, flank pain on voiding and hematuria in freguency. 4) 16(45%) of 35 refluxing ureters and renal units revealed the renal scarring. 5) The prevalence of renal scarring was related to the severity of vesicourteral reflux. 6) Treatment was tried medically in 11 patients and surgically in 10 patients, respectively. Among 11 patients, treated medically, 8 were improved, 1 was stationary but 2 were aggravated Among total 12 patients, treated surgically, including 2 patients of medically treated failure, all refluxes were stopped.
