Abstract
The incidence of twins has difference according to race, maternal age & parity, medication.history etc, especially in the dizygotic twins. Twins have poorer prognosis than singletons due to high incidece of prematurity and LBW, respiratory complications, birth trauma, congenital anomaly etc. Zygosity determination is important and done by placentatal examination, blood typing, physical similarity, HLA etc. We studied the incidence of twins and its relation with maternal age & parity & blood group, placental form, mortality in 544 multiple births (263 twins and 6 triplets) among 22,503 deliveries for 5 years from Jan 1982 through Dec 1986 at Fatima hospital, Taegu. The results are summerized as follows 1) The incidence of twins was 1:84. Z) The incidence of relation with a) maternal age, it was highest over 35 years old. b) maternal parity, it was highest at 3rd pregnancy. c) maternal blood group, it was highest at AB type. 3) Placental eamination; Dichorionic placenta were 59.7%, monochorionic were 44.3% and twins with different sex were 16. 8%. 4) Causes of admission were preterm AGA, SGA, IRDS etc. 5) Causes of perinatal death were stillbirth, infection, respiratory compJication, prematurity etc. 6) Perinatal mortality rate was 119/1,000.
