- Abstract
- Eighty seven patints with abdominal tumor which were diagnosed with abdominal C-T scan and
confirmed histologically were reviewed. These patients were admitted to pediatric department of
Dong San Medical Canter from January, 1980 to June, 1986.
The results were as follows;
Out of 87 patients, 30 (34.5%) were intraperitoneal and 57 (65.5%) were retroperitoneal tumor.
Among intraperitoneal tumor, 15 cases (50%) were hepatosplenomegaly, and among retroperitoneal
tumor majorities were hydronephrosis (22 cases), Wilms’ tumor (16 cases) and neuroblastoma (4 cases)
in order.
The male to female ratio was 2:1 and 59.8% were below 5 years of age.
The accuracy of abdominal C-T scan for intraabdominal tumor was 85.1 % and that of ultrasono-
graphy was 77.8%.
In hydronephrosis, the accuracy of C-T scan and ultrasonography for diagnosis was 90.8% and 82.
4% respectively.
In Wilms’ tumor, no difference between the tentative diagnosis with C.T scan or with ultrasonography and the histologic diagnosis was observed.
In neuroblastoma, the diagnostic acuracy of C-T scan and ultrasonography was 50% and 100%
respectively.
For the tentative diagnosis, abdominal C-T scan looks slightly superior to ultrasonography in its
acuracy.
I.V.P., simple abdominal X-ray, urinary catecholamine level and detection of metastatic organ can
be a supportive diagnostic procedure especially for the differential diagnosis between wilms’ tumor
and neuroblastoma.
