Abstract
A hematologic study was undertaken on 60 cases of control group and 53 cases of iron deficiency anemia group who visited the outpatient department of Pediatrics, Chungnam National University Hospital from January, 1984 to July, 1987 The results were as follows: 1) In 60 cases of control group between 1 to 15 year, hemoglobin was 12.5±1.7 gm/dl, MCV 82.4± 3.8 fl, and RDW 13.1 ±1.1% and there was no difference according to age interval. 2) In iron deficiency anemia group, there were significant differences in RDW and MCV compared with control group. 3) In iron deficiency anemia group, the degree of anemia was significantly related to the change of RDW and MCV. 4) On the response to iron therapy (1) RDW increased to be peak level between 10 to 30th day of iron therapy and there-after gradually declined to normal level after about 6〜 7th month of iron therapy. (2) MCV and hemoglobin became increased rapidly to be normal range during first 30 days and thereafter gradually increased.
