Abstract
Lung perfusion scan was performed on 5 young children suspected as foreign body aspiration who had been admitted on the Department of Pediatrics, Kyung Hee University Hospital from May 1986 to January 1988. The results were as follows: 1) All children had been showed perfusion defect as compatible as acute obstructive lung disease by lung perfusion scan and foreign bodies in bronchial tree were proved on all children bronchos- copically. 2) There was complete concordance between perfusion defect area and lodging sites of foreign bodies. 3) There were more severe perfusion defect in prolonged period since inhalation than that of short period and more slow return of perfusion activity in prolonged period since inhalation than that of short period. In conclusion, lung perfusion scan is easy to perform, safe and minimal co-operative and highly accurate diagnostic method in foreign body aspiration. Especially, it is one of the necessary and important procedures in case of foreign body aspiration which presents vague history of aspiation, insufficient clinical manifestation and normal chest X-ray findings.
