A clinical survey of Very Low Brith Weight Infant was done on 27,170 infants bom at II Sin Christian Hospital between Jan. 1 1983 and Dec. 31 1986. The results were as follows; 1) The incidence of VLBWI in the 27,170 births was 1.0%, and there was no annual variation. 2) Among 10,749 multiparaty there was a higher incidence of VLBWI (1.4%) compared to that in primiparity (0.8%). 3) The incidence of VLBWI in male was higher than that in female. 4) There was a higher incidence of VLBWI in multiple pregnancy (4.8%) than in sigleton pregnancy (0.9%). 5) The maternal risk factors to VLBWI were eclampsia and preeclampsia (17.7%), prolonged rupture of membrane (13.1%), incompetent cervix (10.9%), hepatitis (5.7%), abruptio placenta (4.6%), etc. 6) The mortality rate was 75.5%, and annual mortality rate was progressively improved. 7) Lower mortality rate was noted in the higher birth weight infants and longer gestational age. 8) Most of death occurred within 24 hours (77.9%). 9) The main causes of death were respiratory distress syndrome (47.9%), congenital anomaly (15. 5%), birth hypoxia, sepsis, and etc. 10) The clinical problems in survivors were anemia (36.2%), respiratory distress syndrome (24.6%), birth hypoxia, hyperbilirubinemia, and etc.
