- Abstract
- This study was designed to assess the accuracy and problems of noninvasively measuring right
and left cardiac output at various sampling sites by range gated pursed Doppler echocardiography.
High correlations were found between Fick-and Doppler-derived measurements of systemic and
pulmonary flow as well as the pulmonary to systemic flow ratio in 21 patients undergoing cardiac
catheterization (systemic flow [n=21] r=0.81; plulmonary flow [n=29], r=0.78;Qp/Qs ratio [n=
29], r=0.52).
Outflow tract obstruction. PDA and subpulmonic VSD were the only lesions in which limitations
to the use of conventional method of measurement (suprastmal projection for aortic flow
measurements and parasternal short axis view of MPA for pulmonary flow measurements).
Even in these cases, the multiple sampling sites technique (mitral orifice and right ventricular
outflow tract in addition to the conventional measurement sites), while time comsuming, can solve
the problems.
