- Abstract
- This study was conducted to find out the present status and problems of weaning in the provinces
of Korea with the 578 outpatients who visited Chun-An, Ku-Mi and Eum-Sung Soon Chun Hyang
University Hospital from November 1986 to June 1987.
The results and problems obtained from the study are summerized as follows
1) Among 578 parents of this study, 173 were from country and 405 were from city.
2) The incidence of breast and mixed feeding was 74% in the country and 73.6% in the city. It was
higher than Seoul. The higher education level of mothers, the higher incidence of artificial feeding.
3) The reasons for artificial feeding were lack of breast milk, disease of mother and baby and
occupation of mother in order of frequency.
4) The babies, who started weaning before 5 month of age were 56.1% in the country and 66.7% in
the city. It was lower than Seoul (95%). The higher education level of mohers, the earlier weaning
start time.
5) The main source of knowledge about weaning was books.
6) Diarrhea noticed after supplementary foods, were 23.1% in the country and 18.6% in the city.
There was no difference according to the education level of mothers.
7) The level of knowledge about the following items of rural mothers was lower than that of Seoul.
1) one kind of food at the first time of weaning
2) a spoonful of amount in the beginning of weaning
3) a week of interval between new weaning food
4) one time of weaning food a day at the beginning of weaning
5) offer weaning food before milk
8) The sorts of first weaning foods were fruit, cereals, eggs and vegetables in order of frequency.
9) Egg yolk, given after complete hard-boiling was 13.9% in the country and 25.7% in the city. The
reason for hard-boiling was allergy. The incidence of correct answer was 2.3% in the country and 8.
6% in the city.
10) Breast feeding was continued until 1 year of age (73.5% in the country and 70.6% in the city).
11) Some of mothers (22.0% in the country, 17.3% in the city) thought that it is good to start
weaning as late as possible and it is helpful to baby’s growing.
