Statistical Analysis of Pediatric Diseases in Korea.

Abstract
Statistical analysis of pediatric diseases in patients admitted to the department of pediatrics in 34 hospitals having pediatric residency program for 2 years from Jan. 1985 to Dec. 1986 was underwent for the purpose of assessing the disease pattern in the pediatric aged people in Korea. The results obtained were as follows 1) Total number of inpatients was 112,309, of which 69,266 were male and 43,043 were female and male to female sex ratio was 1.6:1. 2) Prevalence of the diseases classified by organ system was in the following order: respiratory diseases; 34.6%, newborn diseases; 19.3%, digestive diseases; 19.1%, neurologic diseases; 9.0%, car- diovascular diseases; 4.1%, hemato-oncologic diseases; 4.0%, allergic diseases; 2.2%, genetic and metabolic diseases; 1.6%, and endocrine diseases; 0.5%. 3) Major diseases in each organ system were as follows: (D genetic and metabolic diseases: congenital malformations of the cardiovascular system (35.6%), congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal system (28.4%), and chromosomal abnormalities (13. 8%). ② newborn diseases: hematologic diseases (41.3%), respiratory diseases (21.1%), and infectious diseases (12.2%). ③ respiratory diseases: pneumonia (40.2%), acute pharyngitis/nasopharyngitis (12.5%), asthma (11. 0%), and bronchiolitis (10.0%). ④ cardiovascular diseases: ventricular septal defect (34.6%), patent ductus arteriosus (9.9%), atrial septal defect (8.6%), and tetralogy of Fallot (8.2%). ⑤ digestive diseases: gastroenteritis/enterocolitis (63.7%), intussusception (10.4%), and hepatitis (10.4%). ⑥ genitourinary diseases: urinary tract infection (35.3%), acute glomerulonephritis (22.2%), and nephrotic syndrome (16.0%). ⑦ neurologic diseases: seizure disorders (48.9%) and infections of the nervous system (34.8%). ⑧ hemato-oncologic diseases: leukemia (25.2%) and iron deficiency anemia (23.9%). ® endocrine diseases: hypocalcemia (24.5%), diabetes mellitus (14.8%), and hypoglycemia (14.3%). ⑩ allergic diseases: urticaria (40.6%) and allergic purpura (35.0%). 4) Ten most common individual diseases in inpatients were in the following order: pneumonia (13. 9%), gastroenteritis/enterocolitis (12.1%), hematologic diseases in the newborn (8.0%), seizure dis- orders (4.4%), acute pharyngitis/nasopharyngitis (4.3%), respiratory diseases in the Newborn (4.1%), asthma (3.8%), bronchiolitis (3.5%), infectious diseases of the central nervous system (3.1%), and croup (2.6%). 5) Patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect and diseases of the thyroid were more prevalent in the female, prevalence of pulmonary stenosis, headache and diabetes mellitus were similiar in both sexes, and rest were more prevalent in the male.
