- A Statistical Study of the Children with Congenital Heart Diseases confirmed by Cardiac Catheterization and Cineangiography.

- Abstract
- In a total of 537 cases the diagnosis of congenital heart disease and the types of cardiac anomalies
were confirmed by cardiac catheterization and cineangiography during the period of 56 months from
September 1982 to April 1987 at Hanyang University Hospital and these patients studied were
analyzed statistically for the frequency of each individual type of cardiac anomalies.
The summary of the findings are as follows:
1) The patients diagnosed by cardiac catheterization and cineangiography for the first time under
6 years of age were 53.6% and those diagnosed in infancy were 15.1%
2) The male to female ratio is 1.2:1.
3) The relative frequencies of these individual anomalies in order of frequency were as follows:
ventricular septal defect 35.8%, tetralogy of Fallot 17.3%, patent ductus arteriosus 15.3%, atrial septal
defect 7.3% and pulmonary stenosis 5.8%.
4) The high proportion of male was seen for transposition of great arteries and tetralogy of Fallot.
The patients with patent ductus arteriosus and atrial septal defect were predominantly female.
5) The ratio of acyanotic to cyanotic heart diseases was 2.2:1
6) In ventricular septal defects, the cases associated with other cardiac anomalies were 32%, double
outlet of right ventricle being most predominant among these anomalies.
7) Atrial septal defect was predominant anomaly assoicated with tetralogy of Faalot.
8) 13 cases were found to have assoicated extracardiac anamalies, most commonly in urinary tract
system, and in these cases, the cardiac anomalies were predominantly cyanotic heart disease or
multiple complex disease.
