Abstract
1) The PNS X-ray were checked to 258 patients, who were aged between two and fifteen years old in department of pediatrics, Dong San Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym college, from Jan. to June, 1986. They had respiratory symptoms which were recurrent or which persisted more than two weeks. The 70.9 percent of them revealed PNS X-ray abnormalities. 2) The patients who revealed the PNS X-ray abnormalities were analyzed and the followings were obtained. (1) The ratio of male to female was 1.6:1 and 64.5 percent of the patients were between six and ten years old. (2) The clinical manifestations were cough (96.2%), rhinorrhea (71.0%), sputum (63.9%), and nasal obstruction (62.8%). (3) The physical signs were throat redness (47.0%), postnasal drip (43.2%), and wheezing (42.1%). (4) The total eosinophil count more than 250/mm3 were 23.0%. (5) The serum IgE levels higher than 95 I.U./ml were 26.8%. (6) The corrected erythrocyte sedimentation rate (C-ESR) more than 10 mm/hr were 36.6%. The positive results of C-reactive protein were 68.1%. (7) The positive results of throat culture were 11.5% (21 cases) The organisms isolated from throat culture were Streptococcus pneumoniae (11 cases), Staphylococcus aureus (7 cases) and Enterobacter (3 cases). (8) the allergic skin test were performed to 63 cases, the positive results of them were 66.7% (42cases): House dust Mite (37 cases), House Dust (28 cases), and Cat Fur (16 cases). (9) After the administration of four weeks of ampicillin, the PNS X-ray were followed up in 37cases. It showed 70.3% of improvement, 18.9% of slight improvement and the rest remained the same. (10) The 50.3% of patients who had PNS X-ray abnormalities were related with respiratory allergic disease.
