- Statistical Observations for Pediatric Inpatients.

- Abstract
- We observed the patients admitted to the department of pediatrics of St. Mary*s Hospital, Catholic
Medical College during the past 20 years from Jan. 1966 to Dec. 1985 and classified them by year and
disease according to the International Classification of Disease by W.H.O. (1965 Revision).
The results were as follows:
1) The total number of pediatric inpatients during 20 years was 18,686, of which 11,933(63.9%) were
male, 6,753(36.1%) were female and male to female ratio was 1.8:1.
2) In age distribution, neonates and infants less than 1 year of age were 8,254 cases(44.2%).
3) The seasonal distribution revealed high incidence in the fall and summer.
4) The infectious and parasitic disease were the most frequent(27.5%), followed by the respiratory
disease(23.6%) and the disease of newborn(14.0%).
5) The major leading causes of hospitalization were pneumonia(ll.l%), diarrhea(10.7%), low birth
weight infant(6.0%), hyperbilirubinemia(5.5%) and bronchiolitis(5.3%) in the order of frequency.
6) The total deaths were 249 cases and the mortality rate was 1.3%.
7) The major causes of death were bacterial meningitis, sepsis, congenital heart disease, pneumonia
and Japanese B encephalitis.
8) There was the increase of the number of inpatients in the latter half of 1970’s but no significant
change in the distributions of disease and leading cause of admission during the past 20 years.
