- Lumbar Puncture in Children whith First Seizure Associated with Fever.

- Abstract
- The patients included in this study were 143 children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years admitted to Pediatric department of Keimyung University Dong San Hospital with the first episode of seizure and fever
in a 5 years period from July 1, 1979 to June 30, 1984.
All patient underwent lumbar puncture for detection of the causes of the seizure. Patient` s medical records were reviewed and analysed according to the several items between the groups with normal and abnormal CSF findings to identify the factors which are in need of lumbar puncture for the patient with seizure associated with fever. Following conclusions were obtained. Out of 143 children who had first convulsion with fever and had lumbar puncture, 30 iad abnormal CSF findings. We identified 5 factors which can be a risk factors needed
routine lumbar puncture for the children with seizure associated with fever. These factors were as follows:
1) Ages between 6 〜24 months.
2) Focal seizure.
3) Abnormal physical and neurologic findings.
4) Long duration (over 15 minutes) of seizure.
5) Long duration of febrile illness (over 24 hours) before seizure.
