- Clinical Evaluation of Congenital Heart Disease in Down Syndrome.

- Abstract
- The association of congenital heart disease in patients with Down syndrome has been
recognized for nearly 100 years. A wide variety of congenital heart diseases have been identified in these patients. This is the report of clinical evaluation of 105 patients with congenital heart disease in Down
syndrome, experienced at the Seoul National University Hospital, during past 6 years
from Jan. 1980 to Dec. 1985. The results of observations were as follows:
1) There were 105 patients(45.4%) with heart disease among 231 infants and children with Down syndrome.
2) The most common lesions were ventricular septal defect (48.6%), endocardial cushion defect(33.3%),
tetralogy of Fallot(8.6%), secundum atrial septal defect(7.6%). 3) Nineteen acyanotic patients were catheterized; 17 patients(89.5%) had pulmonaryartery hypertension and 15 patients(79%) had pulmonary vascular obstruction.
4) 63 patients were followed up in these series, and among them 20 patients (31.7%) had died.
The causes of death were pulmonary complication in ten cases, congestive heart failure in four cases.
