A study on Serum Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium and Parathyroid Hormone Levels of Cord Blood in Newborn.

Abstract

A study of serum calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and PTH levels of cord blood in newborn infants and those of serum levels of maternal blood at parturition was carried on 38 mother/baby pairs who were admitted to Chosun University Hospital from November, 1982 throgh Desember, 1982. The following results were obtained; 1) The serum calcium levels of cord blood in 38 cases of the newborn infants were 10.86±2.32 mg/dl in full infants 9.68±1.00 mg/dl in premature infants and the mean serum levels of maternals blood in 38 cases of the mothers were 9.12±1.93 mg/dl in fullterm, 9.15±1.27 mg/dl in premature infants. In comparison of serum calcium levels for the newborn infants and the mothers, the serum calcium levels of newborn infants were higher than those of mother. 2) The mean serum magnesium levels of cord blood in 38 cases of the newborn infants were 1.95±0.19 mEq/L in fullterm infants, 1.93±0.47 mEq/L in premature infants and the mean serum magnesium levels of maternal blood in 38 cases of the mothers were 1.83±0.33 mEq/L in fullterm infants, 1.83土0.39 mEq/L in premature infants. In comparision of the serum magnesium levels for the newborn infants and the mothers, the serum magnesium levels of newborn infants were slightly higher than those of mothers. 3) The mean serum phosphorus levels of cord blood in 38 cases of the newborn infants were 5.44+1.52 mg/dl in fullterm infants, 5.98±3.03 mg/dl in premature infants and the mean serum phosphorus levels of mothernal blood in 38 cases of the mothers were 3.94± 2. 03 mg/dl in fullterm infants, 4.28±3.81 mg/dl in premature infants. In comparision of serum phosphorus levels for the newborn infants and the mothers, the serum phosphorus levels of the newborn infants were higher than those of mothers. 4) The mean serum PTH (parathyroid hormone) levels of cord blood in 38 cases of the newborn infants were 1.76±0.78 mIU/ml in fullterm infants, 1.48±0.56 mlU/ml in premature infants and the mean serum PTH levels of maternal blood in 38 cases of the mothers were 2.62±0.67 mIU/ml in fullterm infants, 2.55±0.5 mIU/ml in premature infants. Incomparisio of serum PTH levels for the newborn infants and the mothers, the serum PTH levels of the newborn infants were significantly lower than those of mothers. 5) The each correlations of the serum calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, PTH levels of the cord blood in the newborn and those levels of the mothers were not significant. The each correlations of the serum calcium, magnesium, phosphorus levels of the cord blood in the newborn and PTH levels were not significant.
