- Abstract
- Prostaglandins play an important role in mediating uterine contractions and thus may also be involved in the triggering of premature labor and spontaneous abortion. Consequently inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis has been suggested as a potential means of inhibiting premature labor. There are many controlled studies which have described the use of indomethacin for inhibition of premature labor with success. But there may be
possible toxicity of antenatal indomethacin on the fetus and neonate such as premature closure of ductus arteriosus, pulmonary hypertension, hemorrhagic diasthesis, kernicterus and acute renal failure. Here we studied the potential side effects of antenatal indomethacin on the neonates. The results are as follows:
1)The increase in BUN, serum creatinine level and the decrease in creatinine clearence, urine volume are statistically significant in the study group. And the incidence of acute renal failure in the study group is significantly increased. 2)The incidence of PFC and the need for artificial ventilator is significantly increased
in study group. 3) The bleeding time, platelet count and bleeding diasthesis are not significantly different
between two groups. 4)There is no significant difference in onset time and duration of jaundice and peak
bilirubin level between two groups.
