A Clinical Study on Reye's Syndrome.

Abstract
Ninety three cases of Reye's Syndrome were admitted to pediatric ward of Hanyang University Hospital during 6 year period from January 1979 to December 1984. The following results were obtained; 1)The peak age incidence was under 1 year of age. The sex incidence revealed male predominance with sex ratio 1.6 to 1(M : F). 2)The peak seasonal incidence was noted in spring and winter. 3)The most common preceding illness was URI (75.2%). 4)The clinical manifestations were as follows; unconsciousness(85.0%), palpable liver (80.6%), convulsion(71.0%), vomiting(71.0%), fever(67.7%), coughing(66.7%), diarrhea (19.4%) and respiratory difficulty(ll. 8%). 5)Biochemical laboratory data were as follows; the mean values of serum G.O.T. & serum G.P.T. were 444 unit/Z, 382 unit/Z, respectively. Blood ammonia levels were elevated in expired group. There were not significant difference between survived group and expired group. 6)The prognosis were related to age, serum ammonia, stage on admission, serum LDH and intracranial pressure. 7)Results of therapy was more significance than mannitol therapy above stage JU. 8) The overall fatality rate was 50.5%.
