Abstract
A retrospective study of 234 children with hypertension was done. Those children were selected from the admitted patients to the pediatric ward of SNUH, from Jan. 1 st, 1972 to June 30 th, 1984. Among them, 144(61.5%) exhibited renal diseases, 17(7.3%) endocrine diseases, 15(6.4%) renovascular diseases, 12(5.1%) cardiovascular diseases, 3(1.3%) esstential hypertension, 8(3.5%) miscellaneous casuses. The most common cause among the renal diseases was chronic glomerulonephritis: among tl)e endocrine diseases, neuroblastoma; among the renovascular diseases, Takayasu arteritis. Symptoms and signs were nonspecific and, in most cases, referable to the primary diseases. A considerable number of patients (37 out of 234 patients) had the hypertension which needed surgical treatment. Renal, endocrine and neurologic diseases were predominant in 0-5 year group, renal and neurologic diseases in 6-10 year group, and renal disease in 11-15 year group, respectively.
