A Clinical Study of Intussusception in Infancy and Childhood.

Abstract
Intussusception is the condition of invagination of one part of intestinal loop into the continuous distal segment. The author observed 72 cases of intussusception who admitted at Pusan St. Benedict Hospital from January 1981 to December 1983. The results were summarized as follow; 1)77.7% of patients were under 1 year of age, 95.8% under 2 years of age and peak incidence was noted between 3 months and 9 months of age (52.7%). 2)Male was prominent than female. The ratio was 1.57 : 1. 3)In seasonal incidence, summer was highest (36.1%) and winter was lowest (9.7%). 4)The patients who visited hospital within 12 hours after onset of symptoms was occupied 56.9% and within 24 hours, 86.1%. 5)The cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain or irritability (86.1%), vomiting(76.4%), bloody stool(70.8%), abdominal mass(66.6%). 6)94.5% of patients was idiopathic, only 5.5% of cases was caused by specific etiology; 7) Ileocecal type was 40.3%, ileocolic type was 29.0%. 8)90.2% of cases were successfully reduced by barium enema. 96.8% of patients who visited within 24 hours were easilly reduced by barium enema, 50% of patients who over 24 hours were required with surgical management. 9)Recurrence rate was 6.9%. No mortality.
