- Abstract
- Plasma A.V.P. levels were determined by radioimmunoassay in 31 children who were hospitalized to Pediatric Department of the Korea General Hospital from June 1984 to August 1984. Among 31 hospitalized children, 21 were meningitis cases as for study group and the rest 10 were URI cases as for control group. Meningitis cases were classified as aseptic meningitis group(16 aseptic meningitis cases) and bacterial meningitis group(2 tuberculous meningitis, 1 meningococcal meningitis and 2 partially treated bacterial meningitis cases).
These groups were statistically matched and the results were as follows: 1)Plasma A.V.P. levels in bacterial meningitis group(69.0±22.0 pg/ml) were significantly elevated to compare with that of control group(4.90±3.43 pg/ml).: p<0.005. 2)Plasma A.V.P. levels in aseptic meningitis group(3.43±2.23 pg/ml) were normal and
were no significant difference to compare with that of control group. 3)Bacterial meningitis group revealed hyponatremia but aseptic meningitis group revealed normal serum sodium concentration. 4)An A.V.P./Na(serum sodium) ratio was calculated. Bacterial meningitis group had a significantly greater A.V.P./Na ratio than other two groups: p<0.001. 5)Among 21 meningitis cases, SIADH were developed in 5 cases of bacterial meningitis
group but SIADH were not developed in all 16 cases of aseptic meningitis group. Considering above results, there is not necessary to treat SIADH in aseptic meningitis patient.
