Abstract
A clinical study was carried out to evaluate the effect of PROM on neonatal sepsis on 626 newborns with PROM, who had been born at SNUH during the two-year period from January 1982 to December 1983. The results were as follows; 1) The incidence of PROM was 16.5% and the frequency of prematurity and neonatal sepsis was increased in newborns with PROM. 2) The incidence of neonatal sepsis was increased, as the duration of the latent period was increased and the critical time was PROM more than 24 hours. 3) The risk of neonatal sepsis was very high, in newborns with asphyxia and gestational age below 34weeks. 4) In laboratory findings, CRP>1 + , Immature/total neutrophil ratio>0.2, Total WBC count>24,000/mm3 were very useful in early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. 5) In gastric aspirate culture, Alpha hemolytic streptococci, S. epidermidis and E. Coli were common organisms. And in blood, urine and CSF culture, E. coli, S. aureus, and K. Pneumoniae were common organisms.
