Neonatal Campylobacter enteritis.

Abstract

During the period from Jan. 1982 to July 1983, we experienced 54 cases of neonatal enteritis caused by Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni at the newborn nursery, Hanyang University Hospital. All Cases were under 3 weeks of age and no significant difference was seen in sex ratio. Notable clinical symptoms and signs in order of frequency were diarrhea, fever, jaundice, diminished skin turogr, poor feeding, vomiting and irritability. Consistency, frequency and duration of diarrhea were loose or watery, 6.3±3.9 times per day and 6.5+1.6 days, respectively. Peripheral leukocyte counts were variable, but in 61% of patients band form neutrophils were increased over 400/mm3. Acidosis developed in 54%, however serum Na concentration were normal m all cases. Blood culture yielded no growth of Campylobacter in all cases. Susceptability to antibiotics showed 100% sensitive to erythromycin and 98% sensitive to chloramphenicol, but 100% resistant to cefamezin, methicillin and penicillin. Clinical courses were uneventful in all cases. All possible endeavours to search for the infection sources failed to discover the carrier on this occasion.
