- Clinical Study of the Paranasal Sinusitis in Childhood.

- Abstract
- Sinusitis is generally considered to occur frequency to children. However, objective diagnostic procedures to establish the etiology of the disease have not been used ordinarily because of the growth and development of paranasal sinus in childhood. Due to these difficulties, adequate information concerning the incidence of the disease and its optimal therapy has not been available. This retrospective study was performed in 579 patients under 15 years diagnosed radiographically, The study results were as follows; 1)Sex ratio of the patients was about 2.06 : 1; 390 cases in male patients(67.1%) and 189 cases in female patients(32.9%). 2)In terms of seasonal incidence, winter(from December to February) was the highest, and December was the highest, in monthly terms. 3)Radiographically, the maxillary sinuses were most commonly involved(100%). Next in
frequency, were the ethmoid sinuses(18%), which were always associated with maxillary sinusitis. Only a minority of patients had frontal and/or sphenoid involvement(2.8%). The youngest case in maxillary sinusitis was 7 months old, in ethmoid sinusitis, 3 years, in frontal sinusitis, 6 years and in sphenoid sinusitis, 9 years.
4)Bilateral involvement of maxillary sinuses were account in 328 cases(69.0%), left side alone were in 73 cases(15.4%) and right side alone were were in 74 cases(15.6%). 5)Among the clinical symptoms and signs in sinusitis, nasal obstruction was the most common in 367 cases(63.4%), post nasal drip was in 352 cases(60.8%), rhinorrhea was in 266 cases(45.9%), coughing was in 67 cases(ll. 6%) and headache was in 54 cases(9.2%).
