Early Growth Patterns of Premature Infants Fed Premature Special Milk.

Abstract

We observed 67 premature infants admitted to the nursery of Dept, of Pediatrics, Ewha Womans University Hospital from Sep. 1982 to Aug. 1983. Birth weight were ranged from 1.5 kg to 2.5 kg and no specific problem was noted during admission. Among 67 cases, control group (37 cases) was given formula and study group(30 cases) was given premature special milk fortified MCT (medium chain triglyceride) by random sampling. We determined and compared to initial weight loss, days to regain birth weight, rate of gain in weight, calories and protein intakes at 1 to 2 wks of life and albumin, BUN, NH3, pH, electrolytes at birth to 1 wk of life between control and study groups. The results were as follows: 1)Protein levels of premature special milk was higher than formula and supplied 3~4gm/kg/d and whey： casein ratio was also appropriate. 2) Fat in premature special milk was contained MCT and Vit. E level was 1.5 fold of formula. 3) Calories in premature special milk was lower than formula. 4)Early growth patterns and biochemical analysis of all premature infants fed premature special milk was within normal limit.
