A Clinical Study of Neonatal Pneumothrax.

Abstract
We observed 25 cases of neonatal pneumothorax who were admitted to the department of pediatrics, Ewha Womans University Hospital from January, 1981 to September, 1983. The following results were obtained. 1)The incidence of neonatal pneumothorax was 0.3%. 2)The clinical manifestations of neonatal pneumothorax were as followed; male infant was dominant(M: F = 1.78 : 1), the onset was within 24 hours in the majority(72%), the underlying pulmonary diseases were hyaline membrane disease and meconium aspirationpneumonia (70%), and the incidences of neonatal pneumothorax in lung idseases were 6.6% for hyaline membrane disease and 11.7% for meconium aspiration pneumonia. 3) The types of resuscitation in neonatal pneumothorax cases were intubation and ambu bagging intubation and IPPV, intubation and CPAP, and mask and CPAP in order of frequency. 4)The spontaneous pneumothoraces were 2 cases.; One was full term baby with cephalhematoma, and the other was premature baby.
