- Abstract
- Vesicoureteral reflux is the problem frequently found among the patients with, urinary tract infection and is the most common cause of the chronic pyelonephritis in children, and renal scarring and renal growth retardation due to reflux and infection is the most important cause of hypertension and renal failure. The authors studied clinically 13 cases with urinary tract infection associated with vesicoureteral reflux who were admitted to Department of Pediatrics Hanyang University Hospital. The results are; 1)There were no difference in age and sex distributions of the 13 cases with, vesicoureteral reflux. 2)In routine CBC such as Hgb, Het, WBC, there were no significant findings with respect to the vesicoureteral reflux. 3)In urinalysis, proteinuria and pyuria was observed in 9 cases respectively, and hematuria and bacteriuria was found in 3 cases respectively. In urine culture, 5 cases showed no bacterial growth and only 8 cases had bacterial growth. Among these 8 cases, E. coli was cultured in 5 cases, which was frequently cultured species. 4)BUN, creatinine, 24 hours urine protein and creatinine clearance were almostly normal and were not related to the degree of the vesicoureteral reflux except one case who had renal agenesis. 5)CRP and LDH isoenzyme studies gave no support for the diagnosis of urinary tract
infection associated with vesicoureteral reflux. 6)Of the 13 cases, 20 renal units were found, but there were no difference of incidence about the grade and affected side. 7)Treatment was performed surgically in 9 cases and medically in 4 cases, respectively. Among 9 cases treated surgically, 6 cases were followed-up and showed no reflux in 4 cases. Among 4 cases treated medically only 1 case was followed-up and showed no reflux.
