- Abstract
- A statiscal study on 18,679 newborns who were born in pediatric department of ST. MARY’S Hospital, ST. PAUUS Hospital, Kang-Nam ST. MARY*S Hospital and OUR LADY OF MERCY Hospital in Catholic Medical College from January, 1980 to December, 1982 was performed. Authors studied the mortality rate by birth weight, gestational period, sex, time after birth, Apgar score, mode of delivery and cause of death. The result are as follows:
1)The early neonatal mortality rate was, in average, 15.1 among 1,000 live births. 2) Mortality sex ratio on male to female was 1.39 : 1. 3)According to the birth weight, the lowest risk of mortality rate (2.0/per 1,000 live
birth) was in 3,000~3,500 gm and according to the gestational period, the lowest risk of mortality rate (2.7~3.1/per 1,000 live birth) was in 38~42 week gestation. 4) Number of low birth weight (less than 2,500 gm) infants were 1,434 (7.7% of totallive births), and Number of deaths in the totali low birth weight infants were 234 (83% of total deaths). 5)58.2% of neonatal death occured within 24 hours after birth and thereafter the rate
decreased. 6)65% of total deaths showed under 4, in 1 Minute Apgar score. 7)By the mode of delivery, the highest mortality rate was seen in breech delivery; 11.5% and others showed that normal spontaneous delivery 1.7%, Vaccum delivery 0.4%, Cesarean section 1.6%. 8)The most common cause of death was abnormal ventilation(32.3%), which was followed by prematurity, congenital anomalies, infection and others.
