Abstract
A clinical study was conducted on 23 neonates with hypoglycemia, who had been admitted to the Neonatal ICU of KNU hospital during years period from January 1980 to June 1983. Diagnosis was established by Dextrostix and Eyetone reflectometer, and following results were obtained. Out of total 599 neonates (excluding normal full-term babies), 23 revealed hypoglycemia (3.8%). The incidences of hypoglycemia in premature newborns whose gestational age were less than 30 weeks and 37 weeks were 27.3% and 6.3% respectively, and were significantly higher than that of full term newborns (3.1%) (p<0.005). The incidences in LBW infants weighing less than 1,500 gm and 2,500 gm were 12.0% and 6.8% respectively, and were higher than that of normal weight newborns (1.7%)(p<0.005), Frequently associated or concomittant illnesses were LBW in 66.2%> hypocalcemia in 60.9 % and sepsis in 52.2%. The maternal conditions or disorders of hypoglycemic neonates revealed toxemia and cesarean section in 5 cases respectively, and twin pregnancy 2. In all cases except one with nesidioblastosis, blood glucose level returned to normal within 48 hours after initiation of intravenous glucose administration.
